Special
Page to consider item attributed to Brayton
The dog on the left is in my
collection and is pictured in Chipman's book on California pottery. It
is unmarked, but surely made by Brayton Laguna Pottery.
The dog on the right was recently
purchased on eBay and
attributed to Brayton by the
seller....however, while they are similar, there are
clear differences.
"The bogus Brayton Andy Anderson
dog shown on your page was made in Japan. Brayton was asked by the
gov't to help out with the Japanese reconstruction after WW2 and sent over
some used molds. Some of these came back to haunt them in the form
of cheap look-alike copies. Of course, this happened to many other
California potteries even without their
"help".....thanks Jack Chipman
The dog on the left is larger,
heavier, and more chiseled...this is
apparent in the face, feet,
and hair.
Of course the molds are different...as
is the way they were finished.
Note the flatness and roughness
of the feet on the left dog. It looks
as though the piece was separated
from the worktable with string or
a thin blade...while the right
dog's feet are smooth slipcast.
In this last shot...you can
again see the crispness of the dog on the
left when compared to the one
on the right.
If you have any thoughts or
opinions on the subject...please email me.
